There are six categories of inherent hazards in laser processing equipment.
(1) Mechanical Hazards:
Mechanical hazards include the hazards generated during the movement of laser processing equipment, manipulators or robot moving parts, mainly including the following aspects.
① The sharp edges, corners, and edges of the equipment and its moving parts are in danger of being stabbed or cut.
② The equipment and its moving parts are in danger of overturning, slipping, colliding, falling or throwing.
For example, a robot on a laser processing machine could punch holes in the shield, which could damage the laser or the laser delivery system, and could direct the laser beam at the operator, perimeter fencing, and viewing windows.
(2) Electric Shock Hazard:
Generally speaking, laser processing equipment is a high-voltage and high-current equipment. Electrical hazards may firstly be the injury of operators and equipment damage caused by high voltage and high current, and secondly, the ozone or X-rays generated by unshielded components under extremely high voltage will directly cause personal injury and death accidents such as electric shock.
(3) Noise Hazard:
The common noise sources when using laser processing equipment include the operation noise of smoking and dust removal equipment, vacuum pump motor noise, cooling water pump motor noise, cooling fan rotation noise, etc.
Without proper protection, when the total noise intensity exceeds 90 decibels, it can cause headaches, tinnitus, arrhythmia, elevated blood pressure, and even noise-induced deafness.
The sound pressure level of laser processing equipment shall not exceed 75dB(A).
(4) Fire Hazard:
The use of laser processing equipment may cause thermal hazards such as fire, explosion, and burns, which are divided into two categories: personnel burn hazards and on-site fire hazards.
The explosion sources of laser processing equipment mainly include high-power glass tube lasers, electrolytic capacitors, etc.
Thermal hazards can burn through the cooling system and working gas lines of laser processing equipment, as well as the leads of sensors, potentially causing component damage or mechanical hazards.
What's more, accidental exposure of the laser beam to flammable substances can cause a fire.
(5) Radiation Hazards:
Hazards from direct or reflected laser beams and ionizing radiation.
(6) Hazards from Laser Processing Materials:
A laser is a device that uses energy to cut materials, some of which react chemically at high temperatures. Example: While PVC can actually be cut with a laser, the heat treatment produces hydrochloric acid and toxic fumes. Therefore, we recommend that you do not laser cut PVC to prevent corrosion of the laser system and to ensure the safety of the machine operator.
